Sloppy and similar products have some disadvantages, namely two:

1) It only allows you to control speed, and not latency. Latency can have much more problematic results in AJAX stuff than low bandwidth. Although DSL connections are getting better at that, wireless (UMTS, etc) connections have enormous latency times that may originate chaos in badly written AJAX pages.

2) It's a proxy, so it's more complicated to setup, depending on your development environment. Using the firewall technique, it's usually easier.

I don't see why not! Just tweak the script to handle port 25 instead of 80. Be careful because if you want to add more ports and limit them simultaneously, you also have to create more pipes, with different numbers. But if you just want to limit 25, just copy my script and find/replace 80 to 25! :)

Dear Terminal.app Master,
is there anyway to slow down the upload speed through port 25 with this ipfw technology?
